Newsworthy Publishing  is proud to present John R. Bookwalter as one of our top 101 professionals of 2017. Dr Bookwalter is known as a surgeon and inventor. He was born and raised in Columbiana Ohio, the son and grandson of physicians, Growing up in a family of doctors he decided early on to follow in their footsteps. He attended Amherst College and Harvard Medical School and did his surgical residency on the Harvard Surgical Service at the Boston City Hospital, served 2 years in the Army medical corps, and did a final year of thoracic surgery at the New England Deaconess before going into practice in Brattleboro Vermont in 1973.

In 1979 the Bookwalter Retractor was introduced by the Codman Instrument  Division of Johnson and Johnson which has since become the dominant table fixed retractor on the United States, guided by the concept of “continuous improvement with backward compatibility” Dr Bookwalter is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, The New England Vascular Society, The New England Surgical Society. He has Seved As Chief of Surgery and President of the Medical Staff of the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.  In 2013, He received the distinguished Service Award fron the Vermont Medical Society. Currently Dr Bookwalter is working on ways to minimize the number of ancillary OR personnel in laparoscopic surgery.
